Stage 1 Mt Locke Mountain Climb
16.6 Miles – 2260 Ft Elevation Gain
The race starts in Fort Davis on Hwy 17 where it curves left onto Hwy 188. The first 3 miles will be flat and a good warm up. There is a medium climb up to the Davis Mountain State Park entrance, a small downhill run, then 4 more miles of flat. At mile 9 you will start to climb the foothills of Mt. Locke. For the next 4.5 miles you will have a constant climb, then a false flat. At this point you will exit toward the McDonald Observatory. Now you will start to climb to the top of Mt Locke which is just over a mile but includes grades of up to 17%. For those doing the 14 mile race, the finish line will be just before the climb to the top.
Stage 2 Crow’s Nest
16 Miles – 900 Ft Elevation Gain
The race starts in Fort Davis on Hwy 17 and you will curve right on to Hwy 166. This stage is relatively flat but will often be 1-2% which accounts for the 900 ft of total climbing across the 16 miles. The finish is marked at the intersection of Hwy 166 and Crow’s Nest and is a sprint finish that has a slight rise in the final several hundred meters.
Stage 3 The Scenic Loop Road Race
74.5 Miles – 3700 Ft Elevation Gain
75 Mile Race

At approximately 37 miles into the race you will climb Bear Mountain. At the top as you curve to the right there will be a feed station with handups. Continue on hwy 166 until you reach Hwy 118 and curve right (heading southeast). This route will take you past McDonald Observatory where you finished on Stage 1 but continue on toward Fort Davis. Entering town on Hwy 118 you will merge on to Hwy 17 which is the main downtown strip and the finish line.
Stage 3 Madera Canyon
49 Miles – 3700 Ft Elevation Gain
49 Mile Race
The race starts in Fort Davis on Hwy 17 and head toward Hwy 188 (same as Stage 1). The race will be neutral through town. Stay left on Hwy 188 and once the chase car pulls over you may begin racing. Proceed toward the McDonald Observatory but you will continue on Hwy 118 past the 2 visitor center entrances (you will NOT enter the Observatory). Proceed until you pass the feed zone and you will encounter your steepest downhill section – Proceed with caution. At the bottom of this canyon will be the Lawrence Wood Picnic Area, turn left into this park as the SECOND entrance. Wind through the park and exit back onto Hwy 118 to climb back to the feed zone (you passed earlier). This is your one and only feed zone to pick up something to drink. The finish line is back in town (Fort Davis) near the Olympia Hotel where you started.
